Technicians reach the nacelle of a modern wind turbine by service lift rather than by climbing the full ladder. Some lifts are rope-driven; others climb a guide rail with a rack, using a drive pinion and a separate safety device pinion, in the same way as a construction hoist. The rack runs the full tower height in segments fixed to the tower sections.
The rack requirements follow from that layout. Every segment joint must continue the tooth pitch; the teeth must resist wear from frequent short trips; and the steel must be protected against condensation inside the tower and salt in offshore installations. Lift design, safety devices and certification belong to the lift manufacturer; in North America wind turbine tower elevators are covered by ASME A17.8 / CSA B44.8. We manufacture the rack and pinion components to the lift maker's drawings and specifications.
