Heavier woodworking machines move more mass faster. A wide gantry with two spindles and an automatic tool changer needs more tooth strength than a light router, and M3 or M4 racks are the usual step up from M2. Helical teeth keep the drive quiet and smooth at high traverse speeds.
With the standard helix angle of 19 deg 31' 42", cos(beta) = 0.9425, so the transverse pitch is pi x m / cos(beta) = 10m/3. For M3 that is 10.000 mm; for M4, 13.333 mm. A 30-tooth M3 pinion advances exactly 300 mm per revolution.
On woodworking machines dust, not load, usually limits rack life. Mount teeth sideways or downward where possible, and use a felt lubrication pinion or wiper ahead of the drive pinion on production machines.
