Gearbox gears fail in two ways: surface pitting from contact stress, and tooth root breakage from bending. Carburising answers both: a high-carbon case hardened to HRC 58-62 resists pitting, while the low-carbon core stays tough enough to resist root cracks. Because carburising distorts the part, the teeth are ground afterwards to restore accuracy.
Helical gears carry more load and run quieter than spur gears of the same size because more teeth share the load. The cost is axial thrust on the bearings. Example of the geometry we check on every drawing: normal module 3, helix angle 15 deg, 20 and 61 teeth. Transverse module = 3 / cos 15 deg = 3.106 mm; pitch diameters 62.12 mm and 189.46 mm; centre distance 125.79 mm; ratio 3.05.
Gear load capacity is rated by the gearbox designer, typically to ISO 6336. We manufacture to the drawing and can supply hardness, case depth and tooth inspection reports.
